Tales Of Joy Big Buddy

Big Buddy New Zealand is a non-profit organization with a simple premise: that young boys grow into happier, healthy men if they have a positive male role model in their lives.

The typical story of a Big Buddy mentor begins with a single mother seeking a male role model for her son aged 7-14 (and not out of any lack in their own care, but simply out of a desire to balance the child with some male elements that younger children tend to crave). Big Buddy then thoroughly vets their mentors to find a strong match, ensuring a man of good character and trust is selected to make a change in the boy’s life. They will generally spend a few hours a week together - sometimes doing activities, sometimes just hanging out.

The award-winning secular (non-religious) organization really stood out to us as many of the Joylab team and our guests have children themselves - we understand the power of role models in a child’s life, and want only the best for our family and community.

Big Buddy currently operates across Auckland and have matched over 800 boys and mentors already. They hope to continue making an impact in these boys’ lives, which means they need funding to keep the good work.

We reckoned we could help, and as of 2017 we have been. We were beyond stoked to raise over $63,000 for them thanks to the generous support of Auckland at our long lunch fundraiser, which is now an annual occasion.
